I Took Ovasitol. Here’s What Happened
A nutrition supplement called Ovasitol can really help people with PCOS? I’ll admit, I was skeptical too-until I tried it. I used to believe that most individuals with PCOS can get their needs met through food and didn’t need to take supplements.
It wasn’t until I started researching inositol for a chapter on supplements for my book PCOS: The Dietitian’s Guide, that I saw the evidence first-hand. Inositol, specifically myo and d-chiro inositol (DCI) is perhaps the most studied of supplements for PCOS. If you do a Pubmed search on Inositol and PCOS, you will see over 100 studies, all favorable for helping the condition.
What is Inositol?
Inositol is a pseudovitamin of the B vitamin family, which is like saying, it’s almost a vitamin.
Inositol is found in many foods such as fruit, vegetables, beans and buckwheat.
Inositol works as a secondary messenger to help regulate the activity of certain hormones like insulin and thyroid.
As I have described it before, people with PCOS have a defective doorbell on their cell “doors” or receptors that makes them more resistant to opening. As a result, the cell nucleus doesn’t hear the signal and doesn’t call your pancreas to secrete the appropriate amount of insulin needed. Taking inositol, in particular MYO, can fix the door bell and regulate insulin signaling so only the required amount of insulin gets secreted. Check out this video where I explain inositol’s actions in PCOS:
Most of the tissues in our bodies have a combination of MYO to DCI in a 40:1 ratio. MYO converts into DCI but in PCOS women, this conversion happens too quickly, depleting levels of MYO inositol. Taking a combination of MYO and DCI in the 40:1 ratio, like Ovasitol to mimic levels in tissues is ideal.
Taking too much DCI (600mg or more daily) has been shown to actually worsen egg quality and ovulation.
Here’s what supplementing with MYO and DCI has been shown to help with:
Benefits of MYO and DCI for PCOS
- Regulates menstrual cycles
- Promotes Ovulation
- Improves egg quality
- Decreases the risk of gestational diabetes in pregnancy
- Lowers insulin and glucose
- Lowers cholesterol
- Lowers inflammation
- Improves anxiety
- Improves acne
Ok. I was sold. The research was overwhelmingly positive showing the benefits of inositol. I had to try it for myself to really see what it can do. Here’s my review of what happened with my PCOS when I took Ovasitol.
Curbed My Carb Cravings
Since I can remember, I have always loved sweets, especially baked goods like cupcakes, brownies and cookies. Much more so than my friends. I know I am not alone.
Carbohydrate cravings, whether it’s for sweets or salty foods, or just bread is very common among people with PCOS. Did you know that insulin is an appetite stimulant, driving the urge to eat? And that women with PCOS have been shown to have impaired levels of appetite regulating hormones? This could explain the intense carbohydrate cravings.
Within two weeks of taking Ovasitol, I noticed my carb cravings were diminished significantly. I no longer needed that sweet taste after a meal (even breakfast!) and could easily pass up a plate of brownies.
I felt like what most normal women, those blessed not to have PCOS, must feel on a daily basis.
I have heard from numerous other women with PCOS who notice a difference in carb cravings from taking Ovasitol as well. Have you?
Lowered My Risk for Diabetes
When I first started taking Ovasitol, I had my blood levels checked. My labs were all normal (yes, a healthy lifestyle and medications can do that!) but my hemoglobin A1c or HA1c was 5.4%.
HA1c measures the average glucose level in your blood for around 3 months. HA1c levels of 5.7-6.4% indicate pre-diabetes. Levels at 6.5% or higher indicate type 2 diabetes. (If you don’t know your HA1c levels, ask for it the next time you get your blood taken.)
I started taking the Ovasitol supplement which is a powder you can mix in a beverage or smoothie, twice a day (I love it in green unsweetened iced tea). After 3 months I had my blood levels rechecked. I was amazed! My HA1c dropped to 5.1%! Taking metformin had never brought it lower than 5.4%. My HDL cholesterol, the “good” type, increased (you want high levels of HDL). Wow, I thought, Ovasitol really does work! My doctor was also amazed.
I kept taking Ovasitol.
Three months later (after 6 months of using it), I had my levels checked again: My HA1c dropped to 4.9%. Amazing!
Women with PCOS have been shown to have a 6.8 times higher prevalence of developing type 2 diabetes in middle age than women without PCOS. I truly feel that taking Ovasitol, along with a balanced eating plan, regular exercise, other supplements, and good sleep hygiene has helped to prevent diabetes.
Improved My Menstrual Cycle
Ovasitol has been shown to improve menstrual cycles in women with PCOS. For some, this can happen in as little as one month. I often suggest young women and teens consider taking Ovasitol first before jumping to birth control pills to regulate their cycles.
I am one of the few women with PCOS who gets regular periods. But they were heavy and somewhat long. I would often get fatigued from the blood and iron loss. I did notice after a few months of taking Ovasitol, that my cycle shortened and flow was lighter. Bonus!
Cleared Up Acne
A few weeks in of taking Ovasitol I noticed that the stubborn ugly pimples on my chin and jaw line were going away and rarely come back now. Yeah! One of the many benefits of inositol is its ability to lower testosterone. Inositol has been shown to improve acne by lowering testosterone and androgens in women with PCOS. Thank goodness.
I know it sounds really great, almost too good to be true (and yes, full disclosure: we sell Ovasitol at the PCOS Nutrition Center because we believe in it), but you may have to try it for yourself to believe it too.
My Four Year Update
I have now been taking Ovasitol for four years since I first wrote this review. I am happy to say my HA1c continues to hover around 5% (last week it was actually 4.9%). My skin has never been clearer (no pimples in years) and my cycle has come monthly like clockwork. Cravings are still mostly non-existent except for that time of the month when I need chocolate. I have found I only need to take Ovasitol once a day, with breakfast, to maintain these improvements. I have also been able to reduce my metformin dose in half.

My 13 year old has been diagnosed with pcos. She has been taking one packet of ovasitol for about a week. Should she take 2 packets a day instead. I started her on just 1 because of her age…

Yes, if she tolerates it well, she can take 2 packets per day. We have studies that have used insositol, the main ingredient in Ovasitol as young as 8 years of age with no problems.

Thanks for this article. I just ordered my first pack today. Looking forward to it. I’ve tried inositol in the past, but the digestive symptoms were unpleasant. I’m hoping Ovasitol doesn’t have the same effect. Fingers crossed it works for me as well as you describe. Looking forward to reduced carb cravings and taming the appetite, chin hair and acne are not fun at all.

My Gyno recently diagnosed me with PCOS, I already have a under active thyroid ( I see a different doctor for that) I personally feel that my diagnoses is wrong but have gone ahead and ordered Ovasitol and was wondering if it would have any bad side effects If you take this and don’t have PCOS? All my lab work I recently had done the only test that came back high was my TSH levels so that is why I think my GYNO is wrong about that diagnoses. Any info or advise would be appreciated, Thanks so much 🙂

I was diagnosed in December 2017, I have always had regular periods. Never missed one actually. It was only by chance I found this website on PCOS 3 days ago. I have read the articles and now understand what I have been experiencing since age 15. I’m approaching 69.
Many many thanks. No one talked about these things when I was growing up. I now realise there was a family history with my grandmother, mother and sister all having PCOS. My elder sister has diabetes and I am prediabetic. I’ve been taking Metformin and will up my dose of zinc and magnesium. Yesterday I ordered ovasitol.
I retired from nursing last year so will be very interested in monitoring my HbA1c and lipids. My main concern is to avoid diabetes and heart disease.
Again thank you. I’ll be reading your articles with great interest.

So I was diagnosed with PCOS a month ago, and live a very active and healthy lifestyle. My mom has PCOS, and birth control is what was able to help her conceive as soon as she went off. I started birth control a month ago, knowing it helped my mom. is it a good idea to still take the birth control and Ovasitol? Or should I just do one or the other?
Angela Grassi
January 23, 2018 at 8:37 pm
Hi Rachel, good question. It depends on your goals. Many doctors are now using ovasitol in their teen patients first to see if they get a regular cycle. If there are other reasons you are on the pill (for birth control or to control symptoms of PCOS like acne), you may still want to take it. You can take both the pill and ovasitol together. Ovasitol can still work to lower insulin and decrease cravings.

Marsha, Ovasitol has myo inositol and d-chiro inositol which can improve ovulation. It is possible that you are pregnant (fingers crossed!) but other factors may have delayed your period as well such as stress, lack of sleep, diet or exercise changes.

Hi Angela,
My wife was diagnosed with PCOS last week by Gyno. She had only four periods last year. She was referred to a hospital for further treatment, and currently we are in the waiting list and it may take over a month to get started with the treatment.
She does not have insulin resistance, and all her harmone levels are normal. She does not have high levels of male harmones either. She was diagnosed with PCOS by Gyno through Ultra Sound. Her PCOS could very well be because of genetic reasons as her grand mother also had infrequent periods.
SInce Ovasitol mainly improves body’s/cell’s response to Glucose in the blood, for someone having PCOS not because of insulin resistance, would Ovasitol still help?
Thanks.

Taking ovasitol Before food / after food ? Which is effective? I am 44 female, I didn’t get the menstrual cycle for the past three months. Will I start ovulating again? Is it possible to conceive at this age after using ovasitol?

Taking it with food will work best. Yes, ovasitol does improve hormone balance and ovulation so you could get pregnant at age 44. We also see that as women with PCOS age, menstrual cycles start to regulate, also increasing the chances of conceiving.

April 12, 2018 at 9:08 pm
I have struggled with PCOS all my life, as well as insulin resistance and hormone problems. My doctor first put me on birth control pills for a couple years to help regulate my periods, however I ended up gaining weight and later having surgery to remove a cyst that was growing due to the birth control. Afterwards, I was referred to an endocrinologist because of my insulin resistance and hormone problems (acne, scarring, hair growth, the usual), who then prescribed me with Metformin, also something I took for a few years. While Metformin helped me to regulate my periods and keep my system under control, I still found myself slowly gaining weight and, being as strong as it is, feeling nauseous and dizzy most of the time. At the beginning of January, I stopped taking Metformin, which resulted in me not having a period for January, February, and most of March. I found out about Inositol and Ovasitol and decided to order it. When I had started it I had begun some light spotting a day before, and after a few days of taking Ovasitol at the recommended doses, it has turned into medium to occasionally heavy bleeding. I am now about to end week 4 of taking Ovasitol, and I am still bleeding with a medium flow. I don’t want to give it up, as it is my last resort, and because of the number of positive reviews, I have read about I really want this to work. I know that a lot of people have said that they have not seen results until a month and a half in, therefore I am willing to at least keep going until I finish the supplement. Has anyone else experienced this long bleeding, and should I just stay patient and wait for this to do its job? I also take folic acid, vitamin D, and vitamin B supplements, could these have an effect on the Ovasitol? Thank you so much!

I’ve been taking Ovasitol for my PCOS for about 7 months. I was just looking at my period tracker app and for the past 8 years I’ve oscillated between 35 – 60 days between periods, super erratic. After 2 months of ovasitol things started to change, and over the past 5 months it’s now 24 – 33 days. I’ve never had that consistency! I haven’t done any official testing, but I can offer that as field research. That alone is enough for me to keep taking it. I used to take just Inositol powder, but didn’t have anything like the results I get with Ovasitol.

Hi! Wondering if taking this in conjunction with birth control and then going off birth control would allow my period to regulate? You would have to discuss options with your doctor. Birth control pills do have some risks: http://www.pcosnutrition.com/risks-of-birth-control-for-pcos/
Ovasitol works to lower insulin levels and restore periods. It can be taken with birth control.

Hi! I finished a 3 month supply of Ovasitol and while my cravings diminished, I became more dehydrated (drank plenty of water) to the point my ears would “ring”. Over the years dealing with PCOS I only try 1 new thing at a time. I stopped Ovasotol for a couple of months ( no other PCOS “remedy”) restarted Ovasitol and the same thing happened by the end of the first week. I couldn’t tolerate metformin, but am wondering why the thirst/ dehydration and ringing may have been a side effect. I only took 1 packet in the am daily. Thank you!

Hi,
I am 56yrs old. I was diagnosed with PCOS over 20yrs ago. I have idiopathic edema, which I found out it has to do with luteinizing hormone, along with the weight gain and facial hair. Also, I haven’t had a period in 3yrs GREAT. So, will Ovasitol help with these problems? Lastly will it change me from having periods? Not at all looking to become pregnant.
Thank You
Angela Grassi
May 20, 2018 at 2:29 pm
Ovasitol hasn’t been shown to help with edema, but can restore hormone balance by decreasing androgens and LH levels. This means it can help with facial hair. If you are in menopause, this will not cause you to resume cycles.

Hi Angela
I’ve been reading up on some literature for inositol use for pcos. Recent research has shown that overweight and obese women with pcos and insulin resistance should take 500 mg of the d chiro inositol rather than the 50 mg provided in Ovasitol.
I was wondering what your take was on this as I’ve been taking Ovasitol for a long time. My insulin levels have decreased but menstruation has not regulated.
Angela Grassi
June 22, 2018 at 12:24 pm
This graph https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5463048/table/T1/?report=objectonly
is part of a review paper that lists the research with MI and DCI and the combination. I think the best information is that yes, studies with DCI alone have dosed higher (500 mg or more), but the combination studies have used 50mg DCI, and the 40:1 combination seems to work better than either MI or DCI alone. I wouldn’t advise the higher DCI dose, along with 4g MI per day. Higher levels of DCI have been shown to worsen egg quality.
I hope this helps.

I have PCOS and I started Ovasitol in April, I felt really good on it and my cycles went from 33-37 days to 28-29. I started the ketogenic diet on July 3rd and was due for AF on July 10th or 11th, and I still haven’t got it. I feel a little frustrated, I had PMS symptoms a few days before it was due, like light cramping and super moody. All I have now is some very light cramping on occasion mostly when I stand up. I have felt extremely tired, but I know that it can be the keto. I did test on Monday but BFN. Should I stop ovasitol? Could doing keto and Ovasitol be too much.?
Angela Grassi

Since you started Ovasitol and felt good on it and it shortened your cycles, it sounds like it was working well for you. Ketogenic diets tend to be very low calorie and can stop your period.

I have read wonderful things about Ovasitol and I have started taking it. But then I read a review that says that it can be unhealthy for several reasons, including a negative effect on egg health when trying to conceive. Have you run into this? What are your views on this? I don’t want to take something that might be dangerous when trying to conceive.

October 3, 2018 at 2:15 pm
Alisha, there is very strong evidence that shows a combination of Myo to d-chiro inositol in a 40:1 ratio which is what Ovasitol is, can improve egg quality and ovulation as well as other benefits. DCI alone, at dosages over 300 mg has been shown to worsen egg quality.

Hi, I have a question about taking ovasitol.
I have been taking metformin for PCOS insulin resistance for 4 months as well as the Pill – but my cycle hasn’t become regular and PCOS symptoms are not subsiding. I am exercising 6 times a week and on a low carb, gluten and dairy free diet.
Can I add ovasitol in the mix without my doctors approval? Is it safe to take and manage myself? I’m only asking this as I have searched and not found a doctor who is too clued up or gives me much information about my PCOS.
Would love your guidance on this.
Thanks 🙂

I’m in menopause so I am not sure if I need this supplement or some other form of inositol. I am overweight, have hashimotos and take thyroid hormones. Also have some signs of too much testosterone, excessive hair on face, neck, oily scalp and face. I have chronic fatigue and I believe insulin resistance. I eat a pretty clean paleo diet. Is this supplement recommended for all overweight women or just those in child bearing years?
Angela Grassi
November 5, 2018 at 1:56 pm
Kay, Ovasitol can help you too. It’s not just for fertility. Many women who take Ovasitol see a reduction in cravings and lower glucose and HA1c levels. It has been shown to restore hormone balance and can lower testosterone. Give it a try! A major role of inositol is that it is involved in insulin and thyroid regulation.

Hey, I started of by taking one package and since one month I take two. I did a great job on shortening my menstraul cycles. They were around 35-45 days and now they are between 26-31 days. However they are still quite irregular. Is this normal? My last menstrual cycle was 26 days and the one before 29 days. I wonder if I should go back to one package? As the menstrual cycle was getting shorter?
Thanks 🙂

Great! We recommend giving it a full 3 months of taking it twice a day to see what benefit it provides you. If after that you can definitely experiment with once a day and see how you do with that.

Hello,
My dh and I have been ttc for years. I have PCOS and have been taking Ovasitol for a month now. Can I take any of the other supplements in your store with Ovasitol? For instance the PCOS Nutrition Center Berberine Plus, PCOS MULTI, and PCOS Prenatal? Is taking more than two supplements safe and will it increase my chances of getting pregnant?
Angela Grassi
May 6, 2019 at 6:37 am
No, more supplements will not increase your chances of conceiving. I would suggest the PCOS Prenatal, not PCOS Multi if trying to conceive. Berberine can be added but should be stopped if pregnancy suspected.

Hello, I was on a flight from canada now so I took ovasitol at 1.40 am and now landed in the Uk. So five hours diffference. Could not sleep after taking the dosage. It is now 11 am in the UK and (5 am – Canada time) so it has been only four hours since taking the evening dose of last night.
Should I take now another dose to regulate to UK time? But it would have been only 3 hrs since taking the other dose..
Or should I skip one dose and take the evening dose instead only?
Thank you

I get a period every month, 31 to 33 day cycles and was diagnosed with PCOS about 12 years ago.
I’ve been taking Ovasitol for 3 months now, prenatal and Vit D supplements for a year now. Been TTC for 1 year (we have a 2 year old)
Been doing low carb/no sugar/gluten free for a few months now and down 15lbs.
I had a peak OPK on Oct 12th and now my period is now 10 days late. Taken 2 HPTs + urine sample in the clinic and all have come back negative.
Can a period just disappear like that? What could be happening? Any advice or help would be highly appreciated!
Angela Grassi

Yes, sometimes a period can just stop. This can happen in cases of extreme dieting, stress or exercise. It may take a bit longer for a positive pregnancy test to show up too in PCOS women.

Hello ladies!! I am happy to report after taking Ovasitol for about a month or so I natural started a menstrual cycle!! I am so excited because I am irregular and can go months! I ordered the packets if Ovasitol and take it as directed with water. I immediate started to get sore nipples/breast so I knew my hormones were changing! I am praying this progress continues and jump starts ovulation and of course a baby! I am praying. With that said, once I conceive should I continue ovasitol in pregnancy?

Everyone responds differently to Ovasitol. Some people may experience spotting or unusual bleeding when taking Ovasitol. If that occurs, it may help to cut back to once per day.

Hello,
I have a question about inositol. I’ve been dealing with PCOS for years, and have done extensive research on all sorts of supplements, balanced diets, healthy weight etc, but I’m just now seeing research on inositol. This has claims that the D inositol has to do with testosterone which I was under the impression that was negative for women, and caused masculine pcos features. My husband and I are trying to improve our health/fertility naturally, and are looking to try inositol first, but am unsure which type will help! Can you clear up the confusion? Thanks so much!
Angela Grassi
April 7, 2020 at 9:18 am
Too much DCI (over 600mg daily) has been shown to worsen egg quality and ovulation. Myo inositol is the one you most want. Ideally taking the 40:1 ratio (which ovasitol has) is recommended as the combo treatment has shown to be better than taking myo or DCI alone: https://www.pcosnutrition.com/combination-of-myo-inositol-and-d-chiro-inositol-for-pcos/

My periods are irregular, I am taking MYOCYST M tablet everyday two times before food.
My questions are:
1. Is there any side effects of Ovasitol product?
2. Will it help in ovulation?
3. Is there any problem if Ovasitol will be taken with any other medicines.
Waiting for your reply before buying.
Thanks,

This sounds almost like low blood sugar. The combo for you maybe too much or you started too quickly. I would suggest trying to cut back on Ovasitol to once a day with a meal, ideally breakfast, for several weeks to see if it improves.

I have a few questions, I tried ovasitol before I didn’t really see a difference other than reduced cravings, periods didn’t return but I’m considering trying again. My concern while on it was the “dry” feeling, I was always so thirsty/dry mouth & tmi no cervical mucus ever opposed to when I’m not on it I have neither issue, what would cause this with the supplement? I was also curious of your input on vitex?
Angela Grassi
May 7, 2020 at 10:37 am
Hi Kristen,
Yes, definitely give Ovasitol another try if you want to conceive. Even though you don’t see a difference, you can still be improving your egg quality and ovulation. The reduced cravings are definitely a sign it was working for you. I haven’t really heard of it causing dryness. Wonder if it could have been from other medications you were taking? You can take Ovasitol with hot or cold beverages if that helps.
Not much research to show benefits of vitex for PCOS.

Hello Angela,
I came across this supplement while doing some research on PCOS. I have been recently diagnosed. I am currently 29, turning 30 in 3 weeks and recently married. We both want kids. With the recent diagnoses my period is 67 days late, irregular periods is not a new thing. Is this product proven to help? This has definitely sparked my interest but of course I want to be careful at the same time.

I started taking ovasitol recently during a few days of no bleeding and I then started what can only be described as my first normal period in years- lasted 7 days exactly and with the flow that I used to have. However I haven’t bled since. It’s been 2 months with nothing going on. Any ideas why this might be? Not pregnant as have taken a test . To be honest it’s a welcome break from constant bleeding!

I tried to get pregnant for 3 years unsuccessfully. My doctor kept telling me to lose weight and then she’d help me get pregnant. It was recommended that I cut out gluten. I did. I also started taking ovasitol daily. One packet a day and then working my way up to two. Ovasitol helped so that I didn’t crave junk. I cleaned up my diet with the heIlp up ovasitol and went to the doctor hoping she’d prescribe me clomid. She didn’t because I WAS ALREADY PREGNANT! It took 6 months from the time I started tasking ovasitol with dietary changes. I had a beautiful baby. This is 100% worth a try. Good Luck to all of you with your PCOS journey!

Hi Angela!
I do have PCOS but I have not tested positive for diabetes and all other léveles seem to be normal with the exception of my H1AC, which I have never been tested on. Is it safe to take Ovasitol to just help with my PCOS?

Hey there, two questions: Question 1- does anyone know if this helps with androgenic alopecia? My PCOS has caused me to develop this condition and I am curious since this is supposed to reduce inflammation and lower androgenic hormones, if anyone has seen improvements in this area? Question 2: Has anyone noticed a decrease in belly fat? This is one area where I struggle with at this point no matter what I change in my diet and how much I exercise. Thanks!

Heard about Ovasitol on TikTok. Though I have not been diagnosed with PCOS I have been diagnosed with endometriosis and low progesterone. TTC for 4 years with no luck. I had surgery for my endo and to remove a cycst on my ovary. I also know I have a hormonal imbalance even though doctors say everything is fine, I know my body….I’ve have been using this product for about a month and it helped my anxiety, acne, mood swings, etc. BUT I am 3 days late on my period and I am never late. This is the only thing that I have changed. I don’t want to stop taking it because it helps me so much….but I don’t want to mess my cycles up. I still highly recommend!

Hi,
I was taking this for 6 months last year due to hormone imbalance and had periods every 28-31 days. I stopped taking it in February, had a short period but nothing since and everything has felt all over the place. I bought some more and started again 2 weeks ago, I have had very tender breasts, quite emotional, bloating, lower back and hip cramps and also cramping in the right ovary but no bleeding yet. Had a pregnancy test and it came back negative. Could this be a sign my hormones are starting to balance again?

Yes, many older women with PCOS find Ovasitol can help lower insulin and overall reduced risk for type 2 diabetes. It may also help curb carb cravings and help with these benefits too: https://www.pcosnutrition.com/pcos-and-hysterectomy-is-it-a-cure/

Hi, thanks for the info provided and for answering all the questions. That’s some dedication !!! I’ve gone through all the comments above to search for a similar case to mine. However, to regulate my cycles, I started taking ovasitol 3wks ago and immediately started having nonstop brownish spotting whenever I use the bathroom. I tried ovasitol sometime last year and noticed the same thing, so I stopped using it. My question is, as a PCOS lady with 3periods a year, I’m trying to work on my cycles before I get married and start TTcing next year. I’m not on any meds except my vitamins and the only new thing was the ovasitol. I was hoping to wait it out till 3months, but …what if the spotting never goes away ? Could reducing the dosage in half help ? Or maybe take it once a day instead ? 214lbs and 34yrs.
Looking forward to your response .

Hmmm…we do recommend giving Ovasitol the full 3 months to see best benefit. It would be unusual to see brown spotting the entire time. You may want to reach out to your OBGYN for consult though.

I’m a bit confused. I thought this article was going to discuss taking Ovasitol and Metformin together but I didn’t see that being addressed very thoroughly. I’m concerned about having hypoglycemic drops that cause severe nausea if I mix metformin with Ovasitol. I want to transition away from 2000mg of Daily Metformin but my doctor doesn’t believe in Ovasitol.

Hi, I was taking Diane 35 and Spirolactone for PCOS when I was 17. I have always had mild hirsutism facial hair, stomach hair, lower back/bum hair and even some hair on my nipples and between my breasts. I haven’t had a weight problem though. I was on Diane 35 until it was recalled. I went on to Tricyclan simply for period regularity and stayed on that until the day of my wedding in 2012 when I was 29. I got pregnant 4 months later and developed a large fibroid tumor by the time I was 5 months pregnant. I also developed crazy fine long hair all over my neck and face. Thankfully it went after my daughter was born but it found its way back. Now at 38 years old and another daughter later, I’m at the end of my rope with the hirsutism again which feels worse than it’s ever been, and I have to shave my chin every day. I wish I could rip my face off! I PMS badly I get so Irritated by my husband, I get small localized breaksouts (which are not a norm any other time) I have general anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, I get extremely bad pain in my ovaries, even when I ovulate it’s painful and my period is extremely heavy for 3 full days, I’m talking Tampax Ultra every 2-3 hours! I don’t want to take pharmaceuticals, I don’t want to go back on the pill. I am wondering what I should take? DIM? Chaste Tree? Shatavari? NAC? And will this Ovasitol work with any of those? I sometimes have hypoglycemia symptoms but never been diagnosed. I can’t stand feeling this way and I am desperate to deal with these symptoms:( Please advise. Thank you.

Hi, After reading a lot of good things about Ovasitol, I finally decided to order one. I started taking it 29 June and everything seems going well. I had my period after 3 days and it stopped after 3 days then I will have spotting to light period and some heavy period at night, then stop again for a day or two then repeat spotting to light period with a few hours of heavy period. It’s been a month now. I am a bit concerned. I dont know if I should stop or lower my dosage. I started taking myo inositol since January which made a huge improvement in my cycle. Before taking myo inositol my cycle was 45 to 85 days. Now it’s just 28 to 35 days. However, after reading a lot of good things about ovasitol, I decided to give it a try. But now I’m confused and concerned.

My gynaecologist has recommended myo-inositol to help clear up my amenorrhea (no period as yet in 2022). However, my HBA1C is already consistently in the 4.9-5.2 range over the past six months and my fasting insulin has come right down from 5.3 to 2 mIU/L – which actually flags as being low. I follow a ketogenic diet. PCOS is suspected, but borderline. Thyroid function all clear, as was my hormone panel (AMH 5.35 ng/mL showing possible PCOS). Given that I do not have an insulin issue, is it still advisable to take the supplement – i.e. does it help bring on a period due to other factors, other than insulin resistance? Thanks in advance!!

Hello Angela!
Thank you for such a helpful article, it is exactly what I needed. I also thank you for this comment section that allows us to communicate with you for any questions. I am in great need of advice from a professional like you. I was diagnosed with PCOS at a very young age. I have experienced all the uncomfortable symptoms that come with PCOS such as acne, hirsutism, irregular periods, fatigue, anxiety, etc. I was put on the pill by my doctors as that is usually what doctors prescribe for PCOS. To me, and many women who experience PCOS, view it as simply a Band-Aid to the issue. The pill comes with so many scary side effects that have left me in fear to continue taking it. Though the pill has helped clear up acne, regulate my periods and make them lighter, the pill has given me some effects that have not been the most pleasant such as weight gain, anxiety, and simply the fact that there is a harmful toxin in my system at all times. I have decided that I no longer want to take it. Every time I speak to my doctor about this, he simply states that if I stop the pill all my symptoms will return and that there is no other option than the pill to help my symptoms. After intensive research I have come across myo and d-chiro inositol. I have read in your article that you have taken the supplement for 4 years and have had great results, as I have heard other women with PCOS have as well! I would greatly appreciate your advice today. Will the supplement help me overcome the post-pill symptoms? and is the supplement safe to take long-term, for example, if you do not mind me asking, do you still take it? Will the symptoms return as severe if you stop taking the supplement after a while? Finally, I would like to know if the supplement is safe to take with a multivitamin and a probiotic? You do not know how much I appreciate your time, advice and work today. Sending so much positivity, love and blessings.
Thank you.
Angela Grassi
June 14, 2022 at 10:24 am
Hi Sam, Yes, I understand your concerns with long-term use of the pill. Ovasitol is well tolerated and can be taken long-term. I do still take it-it’s been several years now, with no side effects. I can’t guarantee your symptoms won’t come back if you stop the pill, but most people see benefits with inositols. They can be taken with a mulitivitamin and probiotic. If you need more help, I do provide one-on-one nutrition coaching for PCOS. Best of luck! Angela

I started taking this on Wednesday of this week, and Thursday I started my period and had bad cramps. Today my period is very heavy and I even passed a large clot and my cramping is also bad today. I have not had a heavy period or bad cramping like this since I was younger in middle school/high school. Would it be related? Is it still safe for me to take. I wasn’t sure if it could work that fast or not, or if its just my body reacting to the hormones trying to balance out. Please let me know what you think.

Angela,
Thank you for sharing your experience with Ovasitol. Do you have any information on the effects of Ovasital on your fasting insulin levels? I am postmenopausal. I am taking Ovasitol at the recommendation of my RD (who also recommended your book and this site) primarily to address high (50+) fasting insulin levels. My fasting glucose and A1C are normal. I have been taking Ovasitol for about 2 months and I will have my insulin level checked again in October.

Hi there, we don’t have any studies of using inositol in menopause. You may want to stop it if it bothers you and the side effects out weigh the positives. There are other supplements to lower insulin, including Resveratrol, Berberine, and NAC you may be interested in.

I started taking ovasitol on Nov 9, 2022. I don’t believe I have PCOS or experience any symptoms of PCOS. I have regular periods and get them on the day I am suppose to. We have been trying to conceive for about a year now, which is why I started taking ovasitol since it helps with fertility. I started taking it on Nov 9, 2022 and was late 5 days with my period. I really thought I was pregnant but on Nov 25 I got my period. Is there a reason why my period was late 5 days because I always got my period on time every month.

I have had mixed results from Ovasitol for 3 months. Have not menstruated for last 2 months after first regular cycle of 31 days!
29yF, 130lb, 5ft, TTC.
Original symptoms: Diagnosed with PCOS since I was 16. For the last 10 years or so, my cycles were between 45-60 days, with heavy bleeding for 7-8 days. I do not smoke or drink and follow vegetarian diet but had lot of cravings throughout the cycles, greasy hair (overproduction of sebum), androgen excess leading to coarse facial hair, light acne. Did not ovulate whatsoever. TTC. I was diagnosed with fibroids and polyps in my ovaries.
Solution: Prior to going for hysteroscopy for removal of polyps and fibroids, I was on BC for 3 months. After the surgery, I started taking myoinsitol & DCI (40:1) from amazon 2g/day (1month supply) but it did not work for me in the first month, 7 days after starting Ovasitol (4g/day) 3 months ago, I got my period, I take NAC, Vit D, multivitamins with Folic acid and Berberine regularly, also somewhat regular spearmint and Raspberry leaves tea. Made little changes in the diet, reduced carbs and sugar intake with little exercise.
Update:
Ups: Definitely has reduced my cravings and acne. I feel lighter, lost 3 lbs in 3 months. Facial hair is much lighter. Have not seen acne in last 2 months.
Downs: Still has not regulated my period. The first month of taking the supplements, got my period in 31 days, so I got super excited but haven’t menstruated in last 2 months, no definitely not pregnant, tested negative consistently for last 4 weeks. Hair is still greasy. Still ovulation LH strips negative in past 3 months.I know it can take longer than 3 months, but I got mixed results from ovasitol and I am trying to push myself to continue with the supplements for another 3-6 months, since we are TTC.

Thanks for your feedback. Some people do need to take Ovasitol longer. I have noticed that people in bigger bodies need higher doses of Ovasitol to ovulate and have shorter cycles. You could expirament with three doses a day to see if that helps. Here are other tips if TTC: https://www.pcosnutrition.com/ovulation/

My comment keeps getting deleted.
I am trying to determine if there is something wrong. I was diagnosed with PCOS In my 20’s. I suffer from very heavy and long periods. (6-7 days) I started taking this 2 1/2 months ago. After a month and a half I got a period and it was super light and lasted 5 days. Most days were just spotting . I went off my period and then a week later, another period showed up. Off again. Now it’s a week later and I have started bleeding again. What is going on? Should I stop taking it!?

Hello, I hope you’re doing well. I’ve been taking ovasitol for a few weeks now. Before this I was taking inositol from a different brand but I was experiencing dizziness and feeling a bit out of it so I switched to ovasitol but I’m still dizzy from it and feeling a bit out of it. I know dizziness is a possible side effect but I haven’t seen anyone else talking about it. Should I discontinue or should the symptoms subside?

dizziness may be caused by low blood sugar. Cutting back to just a half a dose of ovasitol per day and having it with a meal will help.

I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS after years of irregular periods and no clear or informative guidance from GPs other than going on birth control. I have opted to try other methods out side of birth control as I want to naturally ovulate. I have been taking Ovasitol since the end of April and noticed spotting almost every day since. I have never experienced this before and stopped taking the supplement for a while as I got a bit worried about the spotting. Despite stopping the supplement it has continued. Is this normal ? Should I continue with the supplement ? It’s very uncomfortable to constantly be spotting everyday.

Its been 1 week I am taking it and for 3 days I am having brown discharge. Why is that? Should I stop taking inositol? Pleas answer.

We recommend doing Ovasitol twice a day for 3 months to see how it will regulate your cycle.
